The Local

Your morning briefing, from your doorstep to the world

About Us

Local news is dying.
We're fixing that.

Stories about your neighbourhood get buried under national headlines, and most people don't have time to search across dozens of local outlets every morning. The Local brings it all together — curated, personalised, and delivered to your inbox before your first cup of tea.

Supporting Local Journalism

Local newsrooms across the UK are under pressure. Titles that once kept communities informed — from town-centre weeklies to borough-level independents — are shrinking, merging or closing altogether. The stories they tell matter: council decisions that affect your street, planning applications in your neighbourhood, the pub that's reopening or the school that's fundraising. Without local journalism, those stories go untold.

The Local exists to amplify that work, not replace it. Every story in your morning briefing links directly to the original source — whether that's a community blog, an independent local paper, or a regional newsroom. When you tap a headline, you're visiting and supporting the journalist who wrote it. More readers means more ad revenue, more subscriptions, and a stronger case for keeping those newsrooms open.

We deliberately prioritise independent and local outlets over national publishers in your doorstep section. Your local paper over a London desk rewrite. Your borough's community blog over a wire story. A neighbourhood forum post over a county-wide roundup. That's not just editorial preference — it's how we drive traffic to the people who need it most.

By subscribing, you're not just getting a smarter morning read. You're helping to keep local journalism alive in your area — one click at a time.

From Your Doorstep to the World

Independent. Free. For Everyone.

The Local is an independent UK service — free to use and free from advertising. We believe local news matters and that everyone deserves to know what's happening in their community, without paywalls or clutter.

We're built on the principle that the best journalism is already being written — it just needs to reach the right people. Our job is to connect you with the reporters, bloggers, and community journalists who are doing the work on the ground in your area.

Founded by Sam Dickerson, The Local was born from a simple frustration: the stories that matter most to people — the planning application down the road, the community garden that finally got funded, the council vote nobody noticed — were being drowned out by the relentless churn of national news. Sam built The Local to fix that. Not by replacing local journalism, but by making sure it actually reaches the people it was written for. The ambition is modest and the mission is urgent: every person in the UK should be able to know what's happening on their doorstep, without having to go looking for it.
